Learning to Play Doubles

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

dobleSuccessful doubles teams provide mutual support when the going gets tough and complement each other in strategic terms in order to impose their authority on the game. Naturally, this relationship will benefit from time and experience in each other’s company on court, but there are some fundamentals that will mean success is more likely to be achieved.

Let’s begin by addressing individual strengths. How good is one partner at delivering the coup de grace through, say, a smash? Which one is more adept at luring their opponent’s into a trap with good drop shots? The best partnership will be made up of players that each have these separate qualities. The former is referred to as the hit player, the latter as the set-up player. Each role is equally important, although there is a certain degree of glamour attached to the role of the hit player, in the same way that in football, goal scorers always seem to be the ones who grab the headlines.

However, any hitter will tell you how important the set-up is, and how much skill that is required to orchestrate the opening for a kill shot. Of course, they will then go on to tell you how they ruthlessly dispatched the shuttle down the throats of the opposing team. But, hey, a certain amount of ego is never a bad thing.

Hit and set-up players can operate either in the front or the back of the court, depending upon the particular strengths in racket technique they possess, but whichever formation is adopted, each individual has got to remember that each point should be a team effort and they must stick to the role that they have been designated.

Players should always keep a keen eye on their fitness and the importance it has in doubles play. Yes, there may be two of you on your side of the court, so twice as many feet to cover the ground, but the same is true on the other side of the net – the pace is likely to be frenetic. You’ll also have to co-ordinate your movement with that of your partner, too, so a keen eye on both your partner and your opponents as well as fast feet are essential.

As well as the physical and technical issues involved in playing doubles, either as level (single sex) or mixed, there is the mental side. That mutual support needed to keep a rally going is also important when one player begins to lose their concentration, either through frustration with their own performance or their partner’s. Loss of concentration can also occur through fatigue. Ensure that there is a constant dialogue between points, and encouraging remarks exchanged when a good play has resulted in a point won.

On no account let frustration begin to eat away at your relationship during the game, because that is fatal. Not only will you stop working as a team, but these problems will not go unnoticed by your opponents, who will most certainly exploit them to the full. Once you stop working as a team and in-fighting takes over, you can kiss goodbye to the match. You may also be kissing goodbye to a good on-court combination.

If you need to improve your dribbling abilities, the smartest thing that you can do is to practice soccer dribbling drills on a constant basis. Concepts to Remember

There are some vital things that you need to recollect when you do soccer dribbling skills. First off, you need to use all bits of your foot – the interior – when doing the drills to develop your entire foot. If you may watch good dribblers, you may notice that they can switch to different areas of their foot when dribbling.

Another thing that you should remember when doing dribbling practice is to maintain the ball at a certain distance from your foot, ideally at a little over one meter from you. This is to simulate a usual situation in a genuine game where you will typically see yourself squeezing between players with tiny space to work on. Dribbling the ball close to you will permit you to develop the facility to pass by a number of opponents without losing possession of the ball.

Swimming Freestyle

swimFor years most of us are taught that to swim faster we must train harder and train more often. In reality, the best swimmers in the world work on the correct technique more than anything else. Swimming is not about thrashing out lap after lap in the pool. Swimming fast is about reducing drag. That’s where the most improvement will be found. Here are a few tips to help you swim freestyle like a champion: Train to perfect technique, not to get fit: Everyone must start out by first getting technique right, and then progressing on to improving fitness. By not focusing on the right freestyle technique at the start, you’re training won’t help you swim faster. Find a coach or mentor: One of the unwritten rules of swimming is that ‘whatever it feels like you’re doing in the water, you’re probably doing the exact opposite’. The quickest way to get better at swimming is to have a qualified person give you feedback on your technique. You can either find a coach in your local area or find a coach online. There are many coaches who allow you send a video of yourself over the internet and they will email you back with advice. Educate yourself: Just as though you would attend college to become a doctor, you must study swimming to become good at it. It is much cheaper than a college education though! Read the books, watch the DVD’s and buy the programs which will show you the correct technique and how to achieve it. Never quit: Swimming fast takes time. It won’t happen in a day, a week or even a month. Persist with your swimming and be consistent with your practice. Don’t train for 3 days in a row and then take a week off and expect for results to show. You must be consistent and focus always getting better through practicing the right technique

The Shoulder Tackle

Friday, May 15th, 2009

There are many ways of stopping a ball carrier. However, the fundamental one, the one you should concentrate on developing, is making good, solid contact with either one of your shoulders in the area above the mid-point of the ball carrier’s thigh.

1. Immediately before you contact the ball carrier, have your body in a crouched, coiled position. Do this by having a good bend in your knees and your hips. As body contact is made, your feet must be well-spread, your toes pointing forward. Keep the weight of your body evenly balanced on the balls of your feet. You must have your entire body under complete control. Then, you can change your movement in any way necessary without losing any of your power.

2. Keep your eyes directed toward the ball carrier’s mid-section, right on his belt buckle. This part is the easiest for your eyes to follow as it is the center of his body and it makes a steady target. If you have your eyes on some other part of his body, a quick side step by the ball carrier can fool you into moving the wrong way.

3. Contact is best made somewhere above the mid-point of the opponent’s thigh. Your head immediately slides to the side opposite the shoulder used in the tackle. If you use your right shoulder, your head goes to the left. Using your left shoulder, your head goes to the right.

4. In making contact with your opponent, come out of your crouched position with a snapping spring-like action. Direct an upward driving force into your opponent with your shoulder by straightening your knees and pushing hard off your toes. As contact is made, your shoulder should be going into your opponent at an upward angle.

5. At the same instant, wrap your arms around your opponent’s legs. With your right hand grasp your left wrist or left forearm. You can also reverse this by using your left hand to grasp your right wrist or right forearm.

6. As the shoulder makes contact and the arms go around the opponent’s legs, you have a double action. Your shoulder is pushing the upper part of the opponent’s body backwards. Your arms are pulling his legs out from under him.

This double action, working in opposite directions, destroys the ball carrier’s balance and down he goes!

7. Sometimes it is more effective to aim your shoulder for the area slightly above the opponent’s knees. This is a good idea when your opponent is unusually tall and strong. On still other occasions, you make a low tackle, going for your opponent’s legs below his knees.

8. When making your tackle from either side of the ball carrier, rather than head-on, try to get as much of the upper part of your body, particularly your chest, directly in front of your opponent. This will help slow or stop his forward progress. At the same instant, you grasp his legs with your arms to pull his feet out from under him.

Passing Skills

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Playing and winning a good game of basketball are two different things. You need to have a good team and team players to win the game. You need to be able to pass good and get to the hoop without any problems. This is why you need to work on passing skills so when you are down around the hoop you can pass effectively and get a shot in. Your team needs to be able to pass the ball and shoot the ball and score. Without a good team you will never get anywhere, you need to be able to be a team and work like a team or you are not going to have a good game when you play. You are not a one man team and you cannot win the game with one person or it wouldn’t be called basketball it would be called Uno ball. So when you are playing a game remember that you have team mates and they will expect you to pass the ball when you are in a pickle and can’t make the shot, they will not expect you to be a ball hog and go for the shot anyways. Your passing game needs to be up to par or when you pass the other team will steal the ball and run down the court and score all over you. That is why it is important to have team practices and to have passing drills. You pass fast and hard so it makes it hard for the opposing team to make a steal and score on you. So when you are passing remember to pass it hard and in the right direction. You will just need to have a team that has good passing skills and knows when to pass the ball and not hold onto it. A ball hog can ruin the score and ruin the team as well. Someone that thinks that they don’t need a team doesn’t deserve to be on a team so therefore will get kicked off the team. You knowing who you team mates are and who aren’t will win the game. You passing to the wrong person will cost you the game. That person will be the ball hog and they will miss every shot because they think they are all good and nobody can stop them. So when you are making a team or playing a game of basketball just remember to pass the ball and not hold onto it when you are in trouble. You will also know how to throw the ball in case it is seconds away from the buzzer ringing and you have a receiver down court and you need to hit him with a football pass to win the game. That is why you need to know how to throw the ball good and right. You will want to hit him in the chest so he can go up and lay the ball up for the winning points.
